Hi designers!
Welcome to the 28th edition of the CUxD newsletter – a curated set of learnings, inspiration, resources, and tips. I’m Clément, Internal Community Lead, and I’ll be writing to you on behalf of CUxD every week.
If you’re not familiar with CUxD (Cornell User Experience Design), we’re a centralized community for UI, UX, and product designers at Cornell. We learn and grow together both professionally and socially!

Learning time - Building your portfolio
Every week, we’ll explore a topic in design. This week, we’ll talk portfolio websites! You might be very familiar with designing your site in Figma, but how can you actually publish it to the web? Here are a few popular & modern options!
Figma Sites
If you already design in Figma, this is the easiest place to start. You can seamlessly transition from design to a live site without having to learn any new tools or code. It’s best for quickly quickly getting something live with a strong visual design.
Framer
Framer sits at the intersection of design and development. More than just a static editor, you can add powerful animations and interactions out of the box! There are also more flexible layout and responsiveness options. Framer feels like Figma because of the similar editing capabilities but is more web-native.
Squarespace
This is a classic website builder that prioritizes structure and reliability. It has pre-built templates and is easy to set up, but is a bit more limited in terms of design customization. It’s also a great place to start if you want host your own online shop too!
Replit
Finally, if you you want absolute control over every single detail of your website, from design to structure to hosting, consider coding your website! I would recommend using a platform like Replit, which combines an editor to actually code in, AI tools, and an easy way to actually deploy your website onto the web.

About
Hello! I’m Lucy Yang :) I’m majoring in Psychology and minoring in Information Science (UX Concentration) and Education. I’m originally from (suburbs of) Dallas, TX.
Fav Figma shortcut
Cmd + Shift + C to copy frame(s) or objects in Figma as a PNG! It’s super helpful when you’re just trying to export your frames into another platform/presentation format (i.e. Google Slides).

Proudest design project
My proudest design experience was being the co-project manager (shoutout to my co-PM, Brandon!) and product designer for Arctas, which is involved with government contracting. Government contracting was not an industry I was familiar with and I was proud of myself and the team for being able to tackle the project. It was interesting to learn about the industry, iterate many different ideas, and what it might look like designing for a start-up.
Advice
This is incredibly cliché, but embrace whatever comes your way! I stumbled into design and learned the most in design by saying yes to as many things as I could within my capacity (knowing when to say no and/or maybe another time is incredibly important too). Even if things do not always work out exactly the way that you imagine, you will find a way to make it into an experience you will value with a little bit of effort. You might be surprised at what you learn–whether that’s about yourself or just in general! You got it :):)
